Carport Canopies: The Case for Dual-Purpose Solar Infrastructure

For commercial and institutional properties with significant parking areas, solar carport canopies offer something rooftop systems can't: the ability to generate solar power without touching the building envelope, while simultaneously providing shade, weather protection, and EV charging infrastructure.

A well-designed solar carport delivers value on three dimensions simultaneously — which is why the economics often look better than a comparable rooftop system even though the installed cost per watt is higher.

Power generation: Carport canopies are typically installed at an optimal tilt angle (10–15 degrees in San Diego) with unobstructed southern exposure. This often produces more energy per panel than a rooftop system constrained by roof pitch, orientation, and shading from HVAC equipment.

Shade and comfort: In San Diego's climate, covered parking is a genuine amenity. For retail, healthcare, and educational facilities, shaded parking improves the visitor and employee experience — a benefit that has real value even if it's hard to put a dollar figure on it.

EV charging readiness: A carport structure with electrical conduit already run to each stall can be upgraded to Level 2 or DC fast charging at a fraction of the cost of a retrofit. As EV adoption accelerates, this infrastructure becomes increasingly valuable.

When the Numbers Work

Carport canopies typically cost $3.50–$5.50 per watt installed — compared to $2.50–$3.50 for a rooftop system. The premium reflects the structural steel, concrete footings, and more complex installation. For the economics to work, you generally need:

  • A parking area large enough to justify the fixed costs of structural engineering and permitting (typically 50+ stalls)
  • High electricity rates — SDG&E commercial customers often qualify
  • Demand charges that storage can reduce
  • A long-term ownership horizon (10+ years) to capture the full return
  • EV charging plans that make the infrastructure investment more valuable

When They Don't

Carport canopies are not the right choice for every property. The economics are challenging for small parking areas (under 30 stalls), properties with low electricity rates, or organizations with short planning horizons. They also require structural engineering review and, in some cases, geotechnical analysis — costs that can be significant for smaller projects.
